Dakota CMX2-DL – Corrosion Gauge with A-Scan

Dakota NDT CMX2-DL ultrasonic thickness and corrosion gauge with A-Scan

The Dakota CMX2-DL adds to corrosion measurement what makes it possible to validate the figure instead of trusting it: the A-Scan waveform. Two channels, six measuring modes, 110 dB gain and a range up to 30 metres.

  • ✓ Rectified and RF A-Scan, greyscale VGA display
  • ✓ Six modes: P-E, PECT, PETP, Echo-Echo, E-E Verify, Coating Only
  • ✓ Pulse-Echo range 0.63 mm – 30.48 m
  • ✓ Two channels with dual pulser and dual receiver
  • ✓ 110 dB gain with AGC and adjustable-slope TDG
  • ✓ Adjustable damping 50–1500 ohm for difficult materials
  • ✓ Single, dual, delay line and pencil probes from 1 to 20 MHz
  • ✓ 4 GB internal memory, USB-C, Windows PC software

A thickness gauge without an A-Scan gives a number and nothing else. When that number is plausible, fine; when it is odd, the operator has no way of knowing whether he has read the back wall of the part, an inclusion, half an echo or a bounce off corrosion on the opposite side. On plant in service that uncertainty translates into repeated measurements, arguments at reporting stage and, in the worst case, wrong decisions about a remaining wall thickness.

The CMX2-DL’s A-Scan shows the waveform as it is: you can see where the gate latched onto the echo, how clean the signal is, whether there are intermediate echoes. It is the difference between reading a measurement and validating it, and in advanced corrosion — where the back surface is irregular and echoes split — it is often the only way to work with confidence.

Compared with the CMX3-DL only the display changes: the CMX2-DL has a greyscale VGA screen, the CMX3-DL a colour AMOLED with faster refresh and portrait views. Electronics, modes, range and memory are identical, and battery life in greyscale is almost three times longer.

When to choose the CMX2-DL

Dakota NDT CMX family of thickness and corrosion gauges
  • You need to see the waveform to validate the measurement
  • Advanced corrosion with irregular back surface and ambiguous echoes
  • Attenuating materials: damping adjustable over six values makes the difference
  • Very high wall thicknesses, up to 30 metres in Pulse-Echo
  • Inspections with different probes: single, dual, delay line and pencil on the same instrument
  • A preference for battery life over a colour display

Main features

Typical applications

The manufacturer names aerospace, automotive, energy, infrastructure, mining, oil & gas, pipeline and rail as its reference sectors.

Advanced corrosion on process plant

Where the back surface is irregular and the numerical reading alone is not enough. See Monitoring uniform corrosion and Pipeline corrosion inspection according to API 570.

Difficult materials

Cast iron, composites, strongly attenuating materials: adjustable damping and 110 dB of gain make it possible to work where fixed-parameter instruments cannot read. Further reading: How to improve results on difficult materials.

Documented campaigns

4 GB memory and PC software for reporting: see DakMaster™ and Data logger vs manual recording.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the CMX2-DL and the CMX3-DL?

Only the display. The CMX2-DL has a greyscale VGA screen with 25 Hz refresh, the CMX3-DL a colour AMOLED at 60 Hz with portrait and landscape views. Electronics, measuring modes, range, memory and compatible probes are identical. In greyscale the battery life is almost three times longer: 35 hours against 12.

What is the A-Scan for in a corrosion thickness gauge?

For seeing the waveform instead of the number alone. It makes it possible to check where the gate latched onto the echo, whether the signal is clean and whether there are intermediate echoes: it is the way to validate a doubtful reading on a corroded back surface or an attenuating material.

What thickness does it reach?

In Pulse-Echo mode the declared range goes from 0.63 mm to 30.48 metres, depending on the type of material and the probe used.

What is adjustable damping?

It is the damping impedance of the receiver, adjustable from 50 to 1500 ohm. Changing it alters the instrument’s response to the signal: different values favour resolution on small thicknesses or penetration on attenuating materials.
