The Dakota ZX-1 and ZX-3 are the entry-level models of the Dakota ZX line of ultrasonic thickness gauges — reliable, affordable instruments designed for operators who need repeatable, fast measurements without advanced data-logging functions. Built in extruded aluminium to withstand the harshest environments and covered by a 5-year warranty, these instruments are the affordable entry point into professional ultrasonic thickness measurement. The ZX-1 is pre-calibrated for steel and is ready to use straight out of the case, while the ZX-3 offers an extended measuring range and additional modes such as high-speed scan, differential mode and limit alarm.

Positioning within the Dakota range
The ZX line is Dakota NDT’s basic range of corrosion thickness gauges. It was designed to be used without specialist training — a key feature for companies that entrust measurements to routine maintenance personnel or workshop operators. The ZX range comprises four models with increasing functionality:
- Dakota ZX-1 — pre-calibrated for steel, manual velocity adjustment (P/N Z-300-0003)
- Dakota ZX-3 — extended range with scan mode, differential mode and limit alarm (P/N Z-302-0003)
- Dakota ZX5-DL — adds a 10,000-reading data logger (P/N Z-304-0003)
- Dakota ZX6-DL — top of the range with Echo-Echo Through-Paint mode (P/N Z-306-0003)
The ZX-1 and ZX-3 models have no data logger: readings are displayed in real time but not stored. This is a deliberate choice by Dakota to offer an essential, affordable instrument with a clean interface and no software complications. If structured storage is required, consider the ZX5-DL, ZX6-DL or the CMX line.
When to choose the ZX-1
The Dakota ZX-1 is the most affordable entry point in the range. It is the right choice when:
- You measure steel only (or alloys with a similar ultrasonic velocity) and do not need to change material frequently
- Part thickness lies in the 1.5 – 200 mm interval
- You want a “switch on and measure” instrument with no initial calibration steps
- Budget is a significant constraint
- Measurements serve as a qualitative/quick check, not as traceable documentation
When to choose the ZX-3
The Dakota ZX-3 is the right choice when:
- You work with different materials (steel, aluminium, copper, brass, cast iron) and need several configurable ultrasonic velocities
- Thicknesses range from 0.63 up to 914.4 mm (the full ZX range)
- You need fast sequential measurements with scan mode
- You want a differential mode to compare the reading against a nominal thickness
- You need a limit alarm to flag areas below threshold (typical in bulk corrosion inspection)
Features common to the ZX-1 and ZX-3
- Standard Pulse-Echo measurement mode
- Dual element transducers with 1 – 10 MHz frequency
- Automatic V-path correction
- Manual Probe Zero via the built-in zeroing disc
- LCD display, 12.7 mm, 4.5 digits, readable in sunlight
- Selectable LED backlight (on/off/auto)
- Selectable mm or inch units
- Extruded aluminium housing
- Powered by 2 AA batteries with up to 45 hours of operation
- 5-year warranty
- NIST and MIL-STD-45662A traceable calibration certificate supplied as standard

Compatible probes
The ZX-1 and ZX-3 use dual element transducers with 1-10 MHz frequencies. The main compatible Dakota probes are:
- CTX-501 — 5 MHz, 11.1 mm diameter: general-purpose probe for steel, typical range 1-150 mm
- CTX-561 — 5 MHz, 15 mm diameter: for greater thicknesses
- CTX-281 — 2 MHz: for attenuating materials (cast iron, alloy steels)
- CTX-1021 — 10 MHz: high resolution on thin materials
- CTX-502HT — 5 MHz for high temperature (up to 500°C with dedicated couplant)
- CTX-5001R — 5 MHz micro-point for restricted access
For guidance on probe selection, see the guide How to choose the right ultrasonic transducer for each application.

Frequently asked questions
The ZX-1 is pre-calibrated for steel only, with a 1.5-200 mm range, and offers essential functions. The ZX-3 has a much wider range (0.63-914.4 mm), supports several ultrasonic velocities for different materials and adds high-speed scan, differential mode and limit alarm.
No, both models operate in Pulse-Echo mode only and require clean surfaces (or removal of the coating) for accurate base-metal measurement. If You need to measure painted surfaces without removing the paint, You need the Dakota ZX6-DL (Echo-Echo Through-Paint mode) or a model from the CMX line.
No. Neither the ZX-1 nor the ZX-3 stores measurements: they are only shown on the display in real time. If storage for reporting is required, choose the ZX5-DL, ZX6-DL or a model from the CMX/MX line.
Dakota provides a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty across the whole ZX line, one of the longest warranties in the industry for this product category.
Yes, the ZX-1 is supplied factory pre-calibrated for the ultrasonic velocity of steel. It is ready to measure as soon as it is switched on. The velocity can still be adjusted manually within the 305-18,542 m/s range to suit other materials, but the purpose of the ZX-1 is immediacy on steel.
