Dakota PMX3-DL – Precision gauge with colour A-Scan

Dakota NDT PMX3-DL ultrasonic precision thickness gauge

The Dakota PMX3-DL is the PMX2-DL with a colour AMOLED display: the same precision down to 0.001 mm and the same five modes, with a 60 Hz A-Scan that is legible in vertical view as well.

  • ✓ Colour AMOLED 1/4 VGA display, 320 × 240 pixels, 60 Hz refresh
  • ✓ A-Scan in vertical and horizontal view
  • ✓ Selectable resolution 0.01 or 0.001 mm
  • ✓ Five modes: P-E, E-E, E-E Verify, Interface-Echo and Interface-Echo-Echo
  • ✓ Single contact, delay line and pencil probes from 1 to 25 MHz
  • ✓ 100/150/200 V pulser, 110 dB gain, damping over six values
  • ✓ Three gates, 64 setups, 4 GB memory, USB-C

In precision measurement the A-Scan is not an accessory for checking: it is the working tool. On walls of a few tenths of a millimetre the echoes follow one another closely, and telling the interface echo from the backwall one — or recognising a second bounce mistaken for a thicker wall — depends on how well the waveform can be read.

The PMX3-DL addresses the problem with a colour AMOLED screen refreshed at 60 Hz, where the gates are told apart by colour and the trace follows the probe without stuttering. The vertical view, available only on the colour models, is needed when the part or the position require the instrument to be held sideways.

In terms of measurement there is no difference at all from the PMX2-DL: same electronics, same ranges, same resolution. What changes is the battery life, which with the colour display drops to 12 hours against 35.

When to choose the PMX3-DL

Screen detail with A-Scan on a Dakota NDT precision thickness gauge
  • You work constantly on the A-Scan, not just to check
  • Very thin walls with closely spaced echoes to be told apart
  • Confined spaces or parts that make the vertical view necessary
  • Environments with difficult light, or laboratory work
  • A fixed workstation or USB power available
  • Frequent documentation with colour screen captures

Typical applications

Aerospace

Measurement on aluminium and titanium with tight tolerances, where the colour A-Scan helps to tell closely spaced echoes apart: see NDT in aerospace.

Laboratory and test room

With mains power the reduced battery life is not a limitation, and the colour display gives its best in controlled working conditions.

Motorsport and thin components

Checking thin walls on lightened components: see Measurement of engine cylinder walls and the special instruments dedicated to racing.

Compatible probes

Single element contact, delay line and pencil transducers from 1 to 25 MHz. See the transducers for precision gauges and the delay line tips.

Standards and certifications

  • Factory calibration NIST-traceable and compliant with MIL-STD-45662A
  • Suitable for measurements to EN 14127 and ASTM E797

For the regulatory picture: NDT standards for thickness measurement.

Frequently asked questions

PMX3-DL or PMX2-DL?

The measurement performance is identical: only the display changes. The PMX3-DL has the colour AMOLED screen at 60 Hz with the A-Scan also in vertical view; the PMX2-DL has the greyscale screen and a battery life of 35 hours against 12. If you work a great deal on the A-Scan and have power available, colour is worth it; if you are in the field all day, greyscale is more practical.

What is the real resolution?

The resolution is selectable between ± 0.01 mm and ± 0.001 mm. The figure actually achievable depends on the material, on the probe and on the measurement mode used.

Are special probes needed?

Yes. The Interface-Echo and Interface-Echo-Echo modes, the ones that make it possible to go down to thin walls, require delay line or pencil probes. The Pulse-Echo and Echo-Echo modes work instead with contact probes.

How many setups can I save?

Sixty-four custom configurations, recallable by application. The internal memory for the measurement data is 4 GB, with an alphanumeric grid or sequential log.
