Firmware updates

Data connection on a Dakota NDT ultrasonic measuring instrument

Firmware is the program that runs inside the instrument, distinct from the PC software. It is updated when needed, not out of habit: an unnecessary update introduces a risk without bringing a benefit.

  • Firmware is inside the instrument, it is not the PC software
  • Update only when there is a reason: anomaly, new function, compatibility
  • Save the stored data before proceeding
  • Stable power supply: never on low batteries
  • After the update, check adjustment and setup
  • RODER support available for the whole procedure

There is a frequent confusion between firmware and software. Software — DakMaster, DakView — runs on the computer and is used to manage data; firmware runs inside the instrument and governs its operation: how it generates the pulse, how it locks onto the echo, how it calculates the thickness. Updating the former is a routine operation, updating the latter touches the heart of the measurement.

This is why the recommendation is to update the firmware when there is a reason: an anomaly acknowledged by the manufacturer, a function you need that your version lacks, a compatibility requirement with a software or an accessory. An update done out of habit, on an instrument that works well, adds a risk without bringing anything.

If you have a doubt about the installed version or about anomalous behaviour of the instrument, write to us before proceeding: in most cases a phone call clarifies whether the update is really needed, and we guide you through the procedure.

Before updating

Checking the adjustment of a Dakota NDT ultrasonic instrument
  • Download the stored data. An update can wipe the memory: readings not saved to the PC are lost
  • Note down the custom setups you have built over time
  • Check the power supply. The update must never be performed with low batteries: an interruption halfway through can make the instrument unusable
  • Do not disconnect the cable during the procedure
  • Plan the right moment: never the day before a measurement campaign

After the update

A new firmware can return the instrument to its factory settings. Before putting it back into service:

  • Restore the custom setups
  • Redo the adjustment on a reference block, with the probe you will use
  • Check a known measurement before going back into the field
  • Check that compatibility with the PC software is maintained

The firmware update does not replace periodic calibration and does not renew its validity: they are two distinct things. See Calibration and adjustment.

How to obtain the firmware

Firmware files are made available by the manufacturer and are not published on this site: the correct version depends on the model and serial number of the instrument, and installing the wrong one is a concrete risk. Write to us stating model, serial number and currently installed version: we check whether the update is necessary and provide you with the right file and instructions.

For work requiring the manufacturer’s intervention, see Repair and service.

Frequently asked questions

Must I update the firmware as soon as a new version comes out?

No. Firmware is updated when there is a reason: an acknowledged anomaly, a function you need, a compatibility requirement. On an instrument that works correctly an unnecessary update introduces a risk without bringing benefits.

Does the update erase the stored measurements?

It can. Before proceeding always download the data to the PC and note down the custom setups: after the update the instrument may return to factory settings.

After the update must I redo the calibration?

The adjustment on a reference block must be redone and the setups restored, checking a known measurement before going back into the field. Certified periodic calibration is a different matter: the firmware update does not replace it and does not renew its validity.

What is the difference between firmware and software?

Firmware runs inside the instrument and governs its operation: pulse, gate, thickness calculation. Software runs on the computer and is used to transfer, analyse and report data. They are two distinct updates, with very different risks.

To check whether you need an update, contact us stating model, serial number and installed firmware version.
