Dakota CMX3-DL – Corrosion gauge with colour A-Scan

Dakota NDT CMX3-DL colour display for thickness and corrosion measurement

The Dakota CMX3-DL is the CMX2-DL with the colour AMOLED display: same electronics and same six measurement modes, but a more legible A-Scan, 60 Hz refresh and both vertical and horizontal views.

  • ✓ Colour AMOLED 1/4 VGA display, 320 × 240 pixels, 60 Hz refresh
  • ✓ A-Scan in vertical and horizontal view, exclusive to the colour models
  • ✓ Six modes: P-E, PECT, PETP, Echo-Echo, E-E Verify, Coating Only
  • ✓ Pulse-Echo range 0.63 mm – 30.48 m
  • ✓ Gain over 110 dB, AGC, TDG and damping 50–1500 ohm
  • ✓ Single, dual, delay line and pencil probes from 1 to 20 MHz
  • ✓ 4 GB internal memory, USB-C, Windows PC software

Between the CMX2-DL and the CMX3-DL not a single line of the ultrasonic specification changes: same DSP platform, same two channels, same range, same modes, same memory. What changes is the screen, and anyone who has worked at length with an A-Scan knows that this is not a cosmetic detail.

A colour display with a 60 Hz refresh returns a waveform that follows the probe without stuttering, tells the gate from the echo by colour and stays legible in difficult light. Being able to turn the view to vertical matters when you are working on a narrow pipe or in a confined space, where holding the instrument horizontally is not possible.

The price of this legibility is battery life: 12 hours on alkaline batteries against the 35 of the greyscale CMX2-DL. For a day of inspection it is enough; on a campaign far from a power socket it is a figure to allow for, together with spare batteries.

When to choose the CMX3-DL

Dakota NDT CMX family of thickness and corrosion gauges
  • You work a lot on the A-Scan and legibility shapes the working day
  • Confined spaces and narrow pipework, where the vertical view is needed
  • Difficult light conditions, where the colour screen stands out better
  • Inspections where colour tells gate from echoes at a glance
  • A power supply or spare batteries are available
  • Anyone who documents a great deal and wants clearer screen captures

Typical applications

The manufacturer names aerospace, automotive, energy, infrastructure, mining, oil & gas, pipeline and rail as its reference sectors.

Inspections in confined spaces

The vertical A-Scan view is meant for the positions in which the instrument cannot be held horizontally: gaps between pipes, manways, inspections at height.

Corrosion with ambiguous echoes

Colour separates the gate from the backwall echo visually, reducing the risk of latching onto the wrong signal. See Monitoring of uniform corrosion.

Documented campaigns

4 GB of memory and PC software for reporting: see DakMaster™ and API 570 and API 653: instrumentation requirements.

Compatible probes

Dual and single element transducers from 1 to 20 MHz in contact, matching layer, delay line and pencil configurations. See the probes for corrosion gauges and the guide How to choose the right ultrasonic transducer.

Standards and certifications

  • Factory calibration NIST-traceable and compliant with MIL-STD-45662A
  • Suitable for measurements to EN 14127 and ASTM E797
  • Suitable for campaigns to API 570 and API 653

Frequently asked questions

Is the colour display worth the extra cost?

It depends on how much you work on the A-Scan. If the waveform is rarely looked at, the greyscale CMX2-DL offers the same performance with almost three times the battery life. If instead the A-Scan is the everyday working tool, the 60 Hz refresh, the colour that separates gate from echoes and the vertical view change the working day in real terms.

Is the measurement performance different from the CMX2-DL?

No. Platform, channels, pulser, receiver, gain, damping, measurement modes, range and memory are identical. The only difference declared by the manufacturer is the display, and as a consequence the battery life.

How long does the battery last?

About 12 hours on alkaline batteries, against the 35 of the greyscale version. The instrument can in any case be powered over USB-C from a PC or from a mains socket.

What does vertical A-Scan view mean?

That the waveform can be rotated and shown vertically instead of horizontally. It is needed when the instrument has to be held sideways to reach the measuring point: in confined spaces, between closely spaced pipes or at height. It is available only on the models with a colour display.
