The three models in the CMX series
- Dakota CMX1-DL (P/N Z-171-0005): base model with five measurement modes, graphic display, data logger up to 4 GB, scan mode at 250 readings/sec. Without A-Scan.
- Dakota CMX2-DL (P/N Z-172-0005): adds a monochrome A-Scan (VGA greyscale 240×160, 2.4×1.8″), 3 independent gates (start/stop/width/threshold), 110 dB gain range, 50 V boost/cut pulser.
- Dakota CMX3-DL (P/N Z-187-0005): colour version of the CMX2-DL with 60 Hz colour A-Scan, rotatable portrait and landscape views for maximum display area.
All three models share the same hardware architecture and the same core functionality: the A-Scan is the fundamental difference between the CMX1-DL (without) and the CMX2-DL / CMX3-DL (with).
When to choose a CMX gauge
- Corrosion inspection in refineries and petrochemicals with structured API 570 procedures
- Mapping of storage tanks to API 653 with complete documentation and A-Scan archiving

- Corrosion under complex coating: PETP, CT and PECT modes cover every scenario
- Inspection with forensic documentation: waveform and screenshots archived as evidence
- Prove-up of simple flaw detection with angle beam probes (available on CMX2-DL/CMX3-DL)
- Asset integrity management with complex trend analysis
The five measurement modes

The CMX series stands out for its five measurement modes dedicated to handling coatings and temperature variation:
- PE (Pulse-Echo): standard for pit & flaw detection on bare material, PE range 0.63 – 1219.2 mm
- EE (Echo-Echo / ThruPaint™): measurement of the metal ignoring coatings up to 2 mm, range 2.54 – 152.4 mm
- EEV (Echo-Echo-Verify / Triple-Echo): accuracy verification with an additional echo, range 1.27 – 25.4 mm
- PETP (Pulse-Echo Temperature Compensation): compensates for temperature variation of the part during measurement, range 0.63 – 1219.2 mm
- CT (Coating Only): measures coating thickness only, range 0.01 – 2.54 mm
- PECT (Pulse-Echo Coating Through): measures coating and metal simultaneously in a single reading

Applicazioni tipiche

Corrosion inspection in refineries (API 570)
The CMX series is the reference for API 570 inspection campaigns on process piping: the A-Scan makes it possible to validate every reading, PECT and ThruPaint™ modes handle anti-corrosion coatings, and the structured data logger documents the CMLs for trend analysis. See Pipeline corrosion inspection: API 570 and Dakota NDT instruments.
Storage tank inspection (API 653)
For the inspection of tank shells and floors under API 653, the 4 GB memory with A-Scan archiving is essential for documenting campaigns on large shells. See Thickness inspection on storage tanks to API 653.
Corrosion under complex coating
PECT mode is unique to the CMX series: simultaneous measurement of metal and coating in a single reading. Ideal for:
- Rivestimenti multistrato (primer + intermedio + finitura)
- Cathodic protection of buried lines (bitumen / polyethylene coating)
- Simultaneous monitoring of paint integrity and remaining metal thickness
- Serbatoi rivestiti internamente in resina epossidica
Materiali difficili
Cast irons, duplex alloys, coarse-grained steels and metal composites present attenuation and grain noise that make standard measurement difficult. The A-Scan on the CMX2-DL / CMX3-DL makes it possible to distinguish real echoes from noise. For technical strategies: How to improve results on difficult materials with an ultrasonic gauge.
Prove-up of simple flaw detection
The CMX2-DL and CMX3-DL support single element angle beam probes for basic flaw detection prove-up: an economical alternative to a dedicated flaw detector when only occasional checks are required. For complete weld inspection see the Dakota FX70-DL.
Modello CMX1-DL vs CMX2-DL vs CMX3-DL
- CMX1-DL: for those who do not need A-Scan but want all the advanced measurement modes, fast scan mode and a complete data logger
- CMX2-DL: adds monochrome A-Scan and independent gates, optimal for most professional cases
- CMX3-DL: 60 Hz colour A-Scan with portrait/landscape rotation, preferred by professionals who work extensively on waveform analysis
For those looking for the top of the range with higher performance, see the Dakota CMX10-DL.

Domande frequenti
Compared with the ZX-3, the CMX1-DL adds the data logger (4 GB vs none), the advanced measurement modes (PETP, CT, PECT), the 60 dB gain range (vs a limited range), 64 user setups and scan mode at 250 readings/sec. For more detail: Dakota ZX-3 vs CMX1-DL: when the basic corrosion gauge is not enough.
Yes. The CMX2-DL and CMX3-DL display the A-Scan in every mode: it is useful on bare materials too, for validating readings, identifying intermediate reflectors and checking signal quality.
Dakota states up to 200 hours of operating life with 2 standard AA batteries, the highest in its class. Intensive use of the colour A-Scan on the CMX3-DL reduces battery life slightly.
Yes. The CMX series supports alphanumeric grid batching (identifying each CML by row/column coordinates) and sequential batching with auto-identifier. Both are managed in DakMaster™ for structured reporting.
