The Dakota CMX10-DL is the top of the range in the ultrasonic corrosion gauge category. It adds a colour TFT display, A-Scan, B-Scan and advanced diagnostic capabilities to the CMX family while keeping the ease of use appreciated by NDT operators. It combines advanced diagnostic capability and professional traceability in a single portable device.

Its strengths include Echo-Echo ThruPaint mode for measuring through coatings, the extended data logger with structured organisation of inspections, the range from 0.75 to 500 mm and 0.01 mm resolution. Compatible with the Dakota dual-element probe range from 2 to 10 MHz, it supports two-point calibration and velocity compensation.

The Dakota CMX10-DL is the top-of-the-range ultrasonic thickness gauge of the Dakota NDT family. The first instrument in its category with Full Wave Capture technology, it combines in a single compact instrument the functions of a corrosion gauge, a precision gauge and flaw prove-up with an angle probe. Equipped with an 800×480 colour TFT touchscreen display, a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, IP65 protection, a measuring range up to 1480 mm in PE and Second Layer mode for composite materials, the CMX10-DL is designed for professional NDT inspectors working in critical applications where full traceability, advanced documentation and dynamic signal analysis are non-negotiable requirements.

Positioning: the Dakota top of the range

The CMX10-DL is the pinnacle of the Dakota thickness gauge range and sits above the classic CMX series. It is designed to replace several traditionally separate instruments with a single platform:

  • Corrosion gauge with A-Scan and B-Scan
  • Precision gauge for thin thicknesses with ±0,001 mm resolution
  • Flaw prove-up instrument with an angle transducer
  • Data logger with full traceability (setup library, transducer library, calibration library)

Unlike traditional dedicated instruments, the CMX10-DL allows a single investment to cover corrosion inspections on tanks and piping, precision measurements on aerospace components and crack prove-up in welds. Its distinguishing feature is Full Wave Capture: all waveforms are recorded in memory together with the measurement, allowing retrospective analysis on a PC with DakMaster™.

Full Wave Capture and Image Collect functions

Full Wave Capture

The distinguishing capability of the CMX10-DL is the complete recording of the ultrasonic waveform together with each stored measurement. This means an inspector can return to the office after a measurement campaign, open the data log in DakMaster™ and re-analyse any measurement as if acquiring it at that moment — repositioning the gates, changing the interpretation of an anomalous echo, exporting the waveform for reporting. This function drastically reduces the risk of having to go back into the field for uncertain measurements.

Image Collect: image-guided inspection

The Image Collect function allows a photo of the component or a CAD rendering to be loaded directly onto the instrument via DakMaster™. The operator taps on the CMX10-DL display at the position being measured, guiding the inspection visually. Each measurement is georeferenced on the image of the part — an approach that reduces annotation errors and speeds up final reporting.

Overlay Comparison

The CMX10-DL allows waveforms from different measurements to be overlaid in order to identify variations in the signal patterns that may indicate structural changes or critical areas — useful, for example, when comparing periodic inspections of the same asset.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CMX10-DL replace the classic CMX series?

The CMX10-DL is the top of the range but does not replace the CMX1/CMX2/CMX3-DL series. The classic CMX series remains in the catalogue as a cost-effective option for those who do not need a colour display, touchscreen, rechargeable battery, Second Layer mode and IP65. The choice between the two depends on the level of documentation required and the operating conditions.

Can I also use it for thin precision measurements?

Yes. With ±0,001 mm resolution, support for single contact and single delay probes and a range starting at 0,18 mm, the CMX10-DL also covers the precision segment. It therefore removes the need for separate corrosion and precision gauges.

How does Second Layer mode work?

Second Layer mode (PE2/EE2) allows the thickness of the second layer of a multilayer composite material to be measured specifically, ignoring the echoes of the first layer. It is essential for inspecting laminates, sandwich panels and aeronautical components with bonded structures.

Does the touchscreen work with gloves?

The CMX10-DL supports keypad-only, touchscreen-only or combined operation. When the operator is wearing heavy gloves or working in critical conditions, it can be operated entirely from the keypad; when maximum speed and an intuitive interface are wanted, the touchscreen alone can be used. This flexibility is one of the key advantages of the design.

Can I connect it to a smartphone or tablet?

Yes, via Bluetooth LE and the DakMaster Mobile App. You can view live measurements, download data and share reports. The Screen Share & Control function allows a remote supervisor to view and control the instrument during the inspection.

Is it made in Europe?
