Anyone supplying non-destructive testing or measuring instrumentation sooner or later has to state which quality management system they apply. The three acronyms that appear most often are ISO 9001, EN 9100 and IATF 16949: they are not in competition with each other, but stand in a precise relationship that is worth clarifying.
The common trunk is ISO 9001:2015, which declares its own universality: “All the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 are generic and are intended to be applicable to any organization…”, that is, “All the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 are generic and are intended to be applicable to any organization”. It is this generic character that makes it the base onto which the other two documents are grafted.

EN 9100:2018 is the reference for aviation, space and defence. The standard “includes EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management system requirements”, that is, it includes the quality management system requirements of EN ISO 9001:2015, and adds sector-specific requirements to them. The sources are explicit about the relationship between the two documents: the additional requirements are “complementary (not alternative)”, complementary and not alternative.

Automotive: IATF 16949 alongside ISO 9001

IATF 16949:2016 was issued by the International Automotive Task Force in its first edition of October 2016. The document “defines quality management system requirements for automotive production, service and/or accessory parts”: it defines quality management system requirements relating to automotive production, service and accessory parts.
Two elements make its position clear. The first is historical: IATF 16949 cancelled and replaced ISO/TS 16949:2009, the technical specification previously in use in the sector. The second is operational: it applies jointly with ISO 9001:2015, not in its place. Suppliers in the automotive chain must therefore satisfy both.
The general caution of this section still holds: none of these three standards certifies the competence of the people performing the inspections, which follows EN ISO 9712, nor the metrological validity of the instruments used, which depends on the traceability of the calibration certificates.
