EN 12668-1: the instrument standard, today EN ISO 22232-1

If a specification still asks you for conformity to EN 12668-1:2010, it is worth knowing at once: that standard has been replaced by EN ISO 22232-1:2020. The old designation still circulates; the current reference is another one.

The first thing to say about EN 12668-1 is that the designation is no longer the current reference. The EN 12668-1:2010 edition has been replaced by EN ISO 22232-1:2020: anyone who today has to demonstrate that a flaw detector meets the performance requirements does so against the new standard. The old designation does, however, keep appearing in specifications, internal procedures and equipment records drawn up years ago, and that is precisely why it is worth keeping track of it: reading «EN 12668-1» in a document almost always means that the document needs updating, not that a different subject is being discussed.

The subject of the standard remains the same and is very specific: the electrical performance of ultrasonic instruments, analogue and digital, “for pulse operation using A scan display, employed for manual ultrasonic non-destructive examination with single or dual-element probes operating within the centre frequency range 0,5 MHz to 15 MHz”. That is: instruments for pulse operation with A-scan display, used in manual non-destructive examination with single or dual-element probes, with a centre frequency between 0.5 and 15 MHz.

The three-part structure is the key to finding your way. Part 1 concerns the instruments; Part 2 the probes; Part 3 the combined equipment, that is instrument plus probe assessed as a system. This division reflects a practical fact well known to anyone who carries out testing: a flaw detector on its own does not make a measurement. The result depends on the combination of instrument, cable and transducer, and it is that combination that has to be characterised when repeatability is wanted between two examinations carried out at different times or places.

What changes for those who carry out testing

On the operational level the main consequence concerns documentation. If your internal procedures, periodic verification forms or purchase specifications still cite EN 12668-1:2010, it is advisable to update the reference to EN ISO 22232-1:2020, checking also that the laboratory or service carrying out the periodic verifications works to the current standard.

The second point concerns the choice of equipment. Since the standard addresses pulse instruments with A-scan display and single or dual-element probes in the 0.5–15 MHz range, the first check to make is that the instrument and the probes in use actually fall within that perimeter.
