Among the references in this section, the PED Directive is the one of a different nature. API codes are technical documents published by an industry association and become binding when a contract or a local requirement invokes them. The PED, by contrast, is a legislative act of the European Union, transposed into national law and therefore mandatory within its scope.
The scope is set by Article 1, paragraph 1: “This Directive shall apply to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure PS greater than 0,5 bar”. How to read the directive and the inspection codes together
In plant practice the two worlds coexist. The directive accompanies the equipment at the moment it is designed, manufactured and placed on the market; the inspection codes, such as API 510 for vessels, concern equipment already in service. Knowing which of the two is being invoked avoids most misunderstandings.
On the instrument side, in both cases the thickness figure has value only if it is traceable: instrument set with calibration blocks of known thickness, repeatable procedure, measurement point identified and recorded. This is the minimum condition for a reading to be comparable with the previous ones and to stand up in a technical discussion.
