Section V of the BPVC does not stand alone: it contains the non-destructive examination methods that the other Sections of the Code invoke and make mandatory. It is always read together with the Section that invokes it.
- âś“ Part of ASME’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
- âś“ Reference edition: BPVC Section V, 2025
- âś“ Requirements and methods invoked by the other Sections of the Code
- âś“ Surface and internal discontinuities in materials, welds and components
Section V of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is the chapter of the Code devoted to non-destructive examination. Its official description is explicit on the point that matters most: “This Section contains requirements and methods for nondestructive examination which are referenced and required by other BPVC Sections”, that is, the Section contains requirements and methods for non-destructive examination which are referenced and required by other Sections of the Code.
From that sentence follows the correct way of using it. Section V does not by itself establish when an examination is to be performed, nor on which components: it is the construction Section — the one governing the vessel, the boiler or the component in question — that invokes it and sets the conditions. Anyone consulting it without the document that invokes it risks applying requirements that are not required in their case, or overlooking others that are.

As for the object of the examinations, the official description indicates that the methods covered serve to detect “surface and internal discontinuities in materials, welds, and fabricated parts and components”: surface and internal discontinuities in materials, welds, fabricated parts and components. The intended readers are equally broad — the text addresses “manufacturers, users, constructors, designers” and the other parties involved — which explains why Section V appears both in supply contracts and in the procedures of inspection services. The reference edition is the 2025 one.
How it fits within the Code
| Aspect | How it is framed |
|---|---|
| Document | ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section V |
| Issuing body | American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) |
| Reference edition | 2025 |
| Content | Requirements and methods for non-destructive examination |
| How it is used | Invoked and made mandatory by other Sections of the BPVC |
What it entails in practice

The first step, when a specification invokes Section V, is to identify which construction Section is invoking it and for which examinations. It is that document that defines the extent of the inspection and the criteria by which the result is judged; Section V provides the method by which the examination is to be carried out.
The second step concerns the equipment and its traceability. A compliant ultrasonic examination presupposes calibrated instruments, suitable probes and documented reference materials, with records that make it possible to reconstruct afterwards the configuration with which the measurement was performed. The availability of data loggers and reporting software eases this part, which in a documentation review weighs as much as the examination itself.
Recommended instruments
| Product | Use |
|---|---|
| Dakota FX70-DL | Portable flaw detector with integrated data logger |
| Dakota FX81-DL | Benchtop detector for fixed examination stations |
| Calibration blocks | Documented references for setting the measurement chain |
| Transducers for corrosion | Dual element probes for remaining thickness inspection |
Frequently asked questions
It contains requirements and methods for non-destructive examination, which are referenced and made mandatory by other Sections of the Code. The methods covered serve to detect surface and internal discontinuities in materials, welds, fabricated parts and components.
No, not independently: Section V is referenced by the other Sections of the BPVC, which make its provisions mandatory. It must therefore be read together with the construction Section that invokes it and with the contractual specification.
The official description indicates manufacturers, users, constructors and designers as the intended readers, in addition to the other parties involved in the process. This is why Section V appears both in supply contracts and in the procedures of inspection services.
