EN 15317:2013 occupies a different place from the other standards in this section. It does not describe how to perform the measurement, but specifies «methods and acceptance criteria for assessing the performance of instruments for measuring thickness using pulse-echo ultrasound», that is, «methods and acceptance criteria for assessing the performance of instruments that measure thickness with pulse-echo ultrasound». The subject of the standard is therefore the equipment.

The scope covers both direct-reading instruments, that is, digital thickness gauges returning a figure, and those with waveform display, and considers them used with single crystal or dual element probes. It is broad coverage, matching what is actually encountered in industrial measurement campaigns.

The standard can also serve to verify equipment covered by the EN 12668 series, in its parts 1, 2 and 3, devoted respectively to the instrument, to the transducers and to the combination of the two. This link is useful when the specification requires the characterisation of the whole measurement chain and not only of an isolated component.

Why it is worth distinguishing method from instrument

Verification of an ultrasonic thickness gauge

When a test report is challenged, the objection almost always concerns one of two planes: the way the measurement was performed, or the suitability of the instrument used. These are different questions and they are settled with different documents. The first is answered by citing the method standard; the second requires instead a reference on the performance of the instrument, and that is exactly the role of EN 15317.
