
As long as the readings stay in the instrument’s memory they belong to one person. The transfer to the computer is the moment they become an asset of the organisation.

The internal memory of a thickness gauge is a temporary archive. It serves to collect readings during the campaign, not to preserve them: an instrument can be lost, cleared by mistake or assigned to another team, and with it the only copy of the work done would disappear. For this reason the transfer to the computer is not an optional step but the natural conclusion of the inspection.
The transfer does not move only the values. The structure of the batch or the grid, the identifier of each point and, on instruments with A-Scan display, the waveform associated with the reading all pass across as well. It is this whole that makes the data verifiable years later: without the structure, a list of numbers allows neither comparison nor review.

There are two available routes. The USB cable connection is the ordinary end-of-day solution: the instrument is connected to the computer and the batches are imported into the management software. Wireless transmission, present on the models that provide for it, instead moves the transfer into the field, and makes it possible for readings to reach an external device while the inspection is still under way.

What happens on the computer

Dakota NDT distributes its software free of charge. DakMaster imports the readings, organises them by project, analyses them with statistics and charts and produces the inspection report; it is the common interface to both thickness gauges and flaw detectors, and this avoids having to manage a different program for every instrument in the fleet.
The transfer does not only concern the direction from instrument to computer. Configuration files can be sent from the computer to the instrument, that is the measurement settings and the batch structures prepared in advance: in this way several operators go into the field with exactly the same set-up, and campaigns remain comparable even when the team changes.
