It does not describe how to perform the measurement, but specifies \u00abmethods and acceptance criteria for assessing the performance of instruments for measuring thickness using pulse-echo ultrasound\u00bb, that is, \u00abmethods and acceptance criteria for assessing the performance of instruments that measure thickness with pulse-echo ultrasound\u00bb. The subject of the standard is therefore the equipment.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scope covers both direct-reading instruments, that is, digital thickness gauges returning a figure, and those with waveform display, and considers them used with single crystal or dual element probes. These are different questions and they are settled with different documents. The first is answered by citing the method standard; the second requires instead a reference on the performance of the instrument, and that is exactly the role of EN 15317.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the practice of managing an instrument fleet this translates into two documents to be kept for every thickness gauge: the conformities declared by the manufacturer, stated on the individual model&#8217;s data sheet, and the calibration certificate in force.
